Miracles all around...are you looking in the right places?

The older I get, the more I find myself shying away from anything related to "celebrity." With the advent of social networking and the increased use of the internet as a news source, we are constantly being bombarded with information that is relatively unimportant, but somehow gets the most attention. On Saturday, in Mentor, Ohio, I was on hand to capture a story of hope, of love, of joy. And I thought, with all of the people in the world experiencing amazing things that make life beautiful, why don't we uplift ourselves by hearing more about such people? Why do we settle for being inundated with the worst, the unthinkable, the superficial, the sensational? When there are stories such as these that can mend us, that can restore our faith, that can make us better people. Celebrating a planned addition to one's family is typically met with joy and anticipation. This was no different for the Paulic Family. With an adorable little boy in their arms, they were most excited to make Milan a big brother. But upon ultrasound, they were told the worst. Their little girl may not live. How does one handle this type of news? How does one go about their daily lives, waiting and hoping and praying, but being told to brace themselves for the worst? How do you make that drive to the hospital on the day of the birth of your child not knowing how long you will have them? What strength...what resiliency...what an exemplary display of humanity. On the way to the hospital, Annie and Tony prayed together, with a special rosary in hand, prayed for a miracle, for strength, for mercy. Just imagine. For a second. If this was you. At the moment of her birth, Lana was silent. Being placed on her mother's chest, quiet and still...until the moment she cried, cried and reached, and gripped her Daddy's hand. Just imagine. For a second. If this was you. The world is full of miracles that we never hear about. That don't make the news. That don't pop into your newsfeed. That don't demand your attention. We don't know their names, we don't see their faces, we don't see their scars. So seek them out, find them, fill your eyes and your ears and your heart with stories such as these. There are heroes among us. They are quiet, they are strong, they are symbols of hope and faith. So here she is, Lana Grace. On Saturday, there was a special Celebration of her life. No media, no hashtags, no trending on twitter. Just a story of the beauty of life. A story with a happy ending...and those are the best kind...
